Hiked Mount Kilimanjaro.....Safari in the Serengeti....Beach Time in Zanzibar (photos to follow).  Now in crunch time to complete all of my practicum hours for June 1st!
Back in action...training clients, teaching classes, planning more classes as the outdoor season of boot camp is slowly coming upon us....only a couple more weekends of massage therapy classes.
During our climb, hydration was always one of our main concerns.  We were told to walk slowly (pole-pole in Swahili) and to sip our water regularly! It was fitting when I saw one of my fellow trainers post this information from the Mayo Clinic regarding water consumption.

Heart Attack and Water Consumption
*Mayo Clinic*

How many folks do you know who say they don't want to drink anything before
going to bed because they'll have to get up during the night!!

Heart Attack and Water - I never knew all of this ! Interesting.......

Something else I didn't know ... I asked my Doctor why people need to
urinate so much at night time. Answer from my Cardiac Doctor -
Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright
(legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks
level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water
because it is easier. This then ties in with the last statement!
I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your
body, but this was news to me.
Correct time to drink water... Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist!

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body:

2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack

I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time will
also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking
hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.

Practicum - Great.....Climb - Soon!

So, there are a couple of big things going on in my life now.
My massage therapy practicum is well on its way, which feels great!
I am doing on site massage therapy at the Pulse Generator (UAH) - where I am currently working as a Health & Fitness Specialist.

My massage therapy clinic runs Wednesdays from 3 to 7pm & Fridays from 1 to 6pm. A one hour massage is $50.  I am able to issue receipts for massage therapy services - clients will then need to submit their claim on their own.  Remedial Massage Therapists Association (whom I am registered with) currently have agreements with the following insurance companies, Blue Cross, Sun Life Financial, Green Shield, Great West Life, Manulife, Equitable Life and Empire Life.

Appointments available:
Friday March 15th at 4:15pm
Wednesday March 20th at 3:45pm & 5:15pm
Friday March 22nd at 1:15pm & 4:15pm
Wednesday March 27th at 3:45pm & 5:15pm

Secondly, I am climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.  I have been training a group for a year and the time has come to climb! I will be Africa bound later this week, and we are climbing starting Sunday! I will be sure to post some pics when I am back!

Thanks ~ Breanne :)

Practicum Has Begun!

Well, some of you know I am in school taking massage therapy.  I am actually in my last few months - count down to June 2013. But first just a little count down to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!
I am doing some practical hours at the University of Alberta Hospital in the Pulse Generator (on site) on Wednesdays (3 to 7pm) and Fridays (1 to 6pm).  My days are booked for this week and next is getting close.  I am going to try to post my available appointments here, so people are aware of my openings.  I will also be available for hire to do mobile massage at a home, workplace or where you see fit - please email me for more details at breanne@funkyfit.ca.
Thanks for the support.

Nourish Move Thrive

Happy New Year!  One of my resolutions is to be more active with my blog.  So, here I go.........
I started getting some great emails sent to me from Alberta Milk.  There is a partnership between them and AFLCA (Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association - organization that certifies fitness instructors in Alberta) - I think they have great information that should be shared.
Articles are written well, easy to understand and information is practical for anyone really! Enjoy! This topic seems fitting as well because breakfast is my favorite meal...hmmmm!
